Concert programme

SCHUBERT Winterreise, Op 89, D 911

Following their successful appearance with us in 2016, we welcome James and Anna back to perform another great Schubert song cycle.

James Gilchrist began his working life as a doctor, turning to a full-time career in music in 1996. His musical interest was fired at a young age, singing first as a chorister in the choir of New College, Oxford, and later as a choral scholar in King’s College Choir, Cambridge.

Since 2006 he has developed a reputation “unsurpassed among lyric tenors” (The Independent). On the concert platform and on the operatic stage he performs music from Monteverdi to new commissions, collaborating with – among others – the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, The Sixteen, English National Opera and the Academy of Ancient Music.

Anna Tilbrook has collaborated with many leading singers and instrumentalists including James Gilchrist, Ian Bostridge, Lucy Crowe, Emma Bell, Mark Padmore, Barbara Hannigan, Willard White, Nicholas Daniel, Natalie Clein, Philip Dukes and the Fitzwilliam, Sacconi, Elias, Doelen and Coull String Quartets.

Having worked together since 1997, Anna and James Gilchrist have made a series of acclaimed recordings of English song for Linn and Chandos. They have also recorded Schubert’s Die Schone Mullerin, (Editor’s Choice in Gramophone), and Schwanengesang along with Beethoven’s An die Ferne Geliebte and Winterreise (BBC Music Magazine recording of the month) for Orchid.
